Cost – call for rates. They have a special for $22 w/cart on Thursday. This is the best of any course this nice in Memphis.
Straight from their website, “Unlike the typical Memphis flat terrain, Quail Ridge is blessed with beautiful rolling hills and elevation changes. Tree lined fairways, seven lakes and a winding creek give Quail a rustic feel that is unparalleled in the Memphis area public golf market.” This is true and it is a beautiful but challenging course. They have a practice green and a nice driving range. Three different size buckets, small, medium and large, $5, $7 and $11. We had a 7:52 tee time and they were ready to go. Very polite and they take care of business. I did notice they have new carts. They have a snack bar with excellent hot dogs. They usually have good tea but no tea today.
Tee Boxes – The tee boxes are set up well with some grass. Again it’s early in the year but they will be fine. This will be the same on most courses here at this time of year.
Fairways - The fairways are decent for this early in the year. There is a good mix of wide fairways and some are narrow and tree lined. We are just now coming out of winter here and all the Bermuda is still brown. I felt like the yardage markers were easy to find and seem to be accurate. There was some good water on several of the holes to keep you honest and I thought it was set up beautifully.
Greens – It is early in the year but the greens were in remarkably good shape. Well maintained. I thought the ball rolled the same on every hole, very consistant.
How did I play? No back pain, so no excuses.
Front nine - Shot a 44. 5 of 7 fairways hit, 4 of 9 GIR and 19 Putts.
I played well on the front with a couple of shots at birdie. I didn’t hit my wedges as well as I would have liked but it wasn’t too bad. Mid to long irons was pretty good. Putting was good but could always be better.
Back nine - Shot a 47. 4 of 7 fairways hit, 4 GIR and 19 Putts.
You start with a Par 4 and I played the hole perfectly. I drove the ball really well. Iron play was good again. Again, my wedge play with a 52 was very good. But, when I tried to do something new with the club, I hit it fat! Every time. On number 18 I had an 8 iron to the green into the wind and it hit it short in the bunker. This is one of my worst shots. I nearly flew the green. Two putted for a double bogey. I had several missed opportunities.
Overall. We played 18 in 3 hours and 40 minutes. They were 3 of us playing and we used all the course. But it was a very good day. In my opinion this is a excellent and very pretty course. I think it is a very challenging course but is still fun to play. I have said this about all the courses I’ve played to date but it’s true. In the next couple of months, the greens and tee boxes will come in with nice grass and it will be gorgeous. It was crowded for a Thursday but play was steady.
9 of 14 Fairways Hit
Only 8 GIR, This has got to get better.
38 Putts, well I know what to work on.
